Fish: The Other Meat
People don’t often think of eating fish when they think of eating meat, but they should. Adding fish to your diet can help you lose weight and is good for your body.
Your body needs protein to survive, and some of the best sources of protein are found in meats. Unfortunately, many types of meet (like beef and pork) come with unhealthy levels of fat and cholesterol.
Fish is high in protein and relatively low in fat and cholesterol. But the real benefit to adding fish to your diet is that it contains fatty acids and omega-3, which are essential to good health.
Omega-3 comes from the oils found in fish and is shown to promote good heart health and is believed to be beneficial in stroke prevention. The American Heart Association says that the average person should eat fish rich in omega-3 at least twice a week.
In addition, there are studies currently underway that seem to indicate that a omega-3 can help prevent macular degeneration, kidney disease and even cancer.
What kinds of fish are best?
If you want to get the most benefit of eating fish rich in omega-3 look for:
- Atlantic salmon
- Pink salmon
- White tuna
- Alaskan king crab
- Scallops
These have among the highest levels of omega-3 per serving, but eating other types of fish more often will give you the same benefits.
What about mercury?
Many people tend to stay away from eating fish because they’ve heard that it contains mercury, which is deadly to humans. The truth is that all fish do contain small levels of mercury, and the FDA has said that the trace amounts found in most fish don’t substantiate serious health concerns for the average person.
Pregnant women, however, are encouraged to avoid seafood like shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel because these have the highest levels of mercury compared to other types of seafood.
If you’re concerned about eating healthier, feeling better and losing weight, you can’t go wrong with adding fish to your meals several times a week. And, if you’re looking for better ways to lose weight and eat healthier, check out the DiestsCentral website.
